The demand for immediate diagnosis has increased the need and the prevalence of point-of-care testing. The applications in the marketplace require robust and quantitative devices that can detect a wide range of target antigens at low cost. Solutions to sample preparation that are most attractive are ones that operate without the use of thermal cycling and use simplified extraction methods. Delivering medically important information to patients at the bedside or direct-to-consumer will open up avenues for improved disease management and have already significantly impacted HIV patient care.
